There are many ways to approach maternity portrait sessions. I will work with you based on your level of comfort and the type of photography you would like to create. It's always your decision.
Some women prefer tastefully artistic semi-nude images, while others might prefer to be more fully covered. Then there are those in-between who opt for a bare belly with all else covered.
Whatever makes you happy and shows off that incredible baby bump will make for the nicest maternity portraits. Remember, it's always all about you!
Some of my favorite maternity portraits include:
- Fabric wraps - a custom wrapped "gown" of fabric is a nice artistic option
- Flowing nightgowns
&/or silken robes blowing in the breeze
- Tank top & jeans (unbuttoned, of course, to accomodate that growing belly!)
- Daddy's dress shirt worn open with a loose necktie & a pair of his boxer shorts is adorable!
Other items to have handy include:
- Flesh tone & black panties
- Flesh tone & black bras (preferably strapless)
- Stretch pants or low-waisted pants that won't be too bunchy when you lower them to show off the belly
- If you'd like, some moms-to-be bring props like teddy bears & rattles.
In preparation before your professional maternity photography session:
- Be sure to have fingernails and toes portrait ready - well manicured and moisturized
- Legs & underarms shaved
- An hour or so before the session, please remove any items of clothing that might leave strap marks or indentations on your skin, especially around the belly.
- Keep make-up light, natural, & fresh
It's a wonderful idea to include your partner in some of your pregnacy portrait images.
This is a special time for both parents. He or she may come along for moral support, but remind them to also be well-groomed & portrait-ready just in case!
Your maternity portrait photography session should take place in your third trimester. You want to be far enough along that you've got a nice, ripe belly, but not so far that you are impatiently uncomfortable.
Don't worry about those stretch marks & scars. I always remove them from the final images unless you specifically request that I don't.
